You’ve found the perfect new place and you’re surely excited, but like most of use you are definitely dreading the move. Between packing, heavy lifting and transferring utilities moving is both physically and mentally draining. To try and help with the madness and stress, here are:
5 Tips to Make Your Next Move Hassle-Free
- Pack Essentials First You will surely be exhausted after a day of moving so pack an overnight bag with a change of clothing, your toothbrush, toiletries and cellphone charger. Essentials such as toilet paper, towels, medications, trash bags and food should be packed in clear plastic bins for easy access. This will avoid the need to unpack after a tiring day of moving.
- Use a Numerical or Color Coding System Using a numerical or color code system keeps you organized and makes unpacking much easier. Begin by choosing a color for each room and labeling boxes accordingly with stickers or colored tape. To take organization one step further, number each box and create a list by box and jot down the contents.
- Plan A head If possible, begin planning your move at least two months prior to the anticipated move-in date. This will give you ample time to schedule the transfer of mail, utilities and magazine subscriptions. Don’t forget to update checkbooks, bank accounts and address labels with your new address. If you have items that you want to give or throw away, contact local charities to arrange a pickup at least 6 weeks prior to the move. You can make a little money by posting these unwanted items for sale on Craigslist, Ebay or Amazon.
- Get Creative When Packing All those suitcases, laundry baskets, bins and hampers shouldn’t make the move empty handed. Greatly reduce the number of heavy boxes you will have to carry by using luggage and baskets. Wheeled suitcases are excellent for packing books and clothing can be used to wrap glass, dishes and other fragile items.
- Take Lots of Pictures If you’re renting, be sure to take plenty of photos of both your old and new place. It’s best to take photos in clean, empty rooms so any damages, or lack thereof, are clearly visible.
